As Dixon puts it, “In many sentences start and begin may be substituted one for the other with little or no change in meaning” (Dixon 2005: 181). On the one hand there is the contrast between the two matrix verbs. Non-finite complement constructions with the English matrix verbs begin and start exhibit a degree of similarity, if not outright synonymy, along two axes.
